Photography for the people, projects and infrastructure that build Northern California

Construction photography is about more than documenting a finished building. It is about capturing the people, equipment, craftsmanship, engineering and progress that bring a project to life.

Red Tail Photography provides commercial construction and engineering photography throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento Valley and Central Valley, with assignments throughout California and beyond. With nearly 40 years of professional photography experience, we understand how to work in active construction environments while creating images that are useful for marketing, documentation, corporate communications and publications.

Photographing Construction:
From Groundbreaking to Completion

Every stage of a construction project presents different photographic opportunities.

We photograph:

  • Active construction sites and jobsite operations

  • Project progress and milestone documentation

  • Construction crews and workforce

  • Equipment and specialized machinery

  • Structural and architectural details

  • Concrete, steel and building systems

  • Electrical, mechanical and HVAC installations

  • Infrastructure and utility projects

  • Commercial and corporate facilities

  • Completed projects and finished spaces

  • Aerial and drone perspectives

The goal isn't simply to record what happened. It's to create photographs that communicate the scale, complexity, craftsmanship and people behind the project.

Experience in the Field

Construction photography often means working in environments that aren't designed for photographers.

We've photographed active jobsites, industrial facilities, underground utility vaults, infrastructure projects and other challenging locations where conditions can change quickly. We've worked around heavy equipment, construction crews, restricted areas, difficult lighting and demanding schedules.

That experience matters.

We understand that a construction photographer needs to be able to work safely and efficiently without becoming an obstacle to the people doing the job.

Photography for Contractors, Subcontractors & Engineering Firms

Construction projects involve far more than the general contractor.

Red Tail Photography works with companies throughout the construction and engineering industry, including:

General Contractors
Project documentation, progress photography, completed projects, marketing and corporate communications.

Subcontractors & Specialty Contractors
Photography that demonstrates specialized capabilities, workmanship, equipment and completed installations.

Engineering Firms
Infrastructure, engineering projects, field operations, facilities and the people behind technical projects.

Architects & Designers
Finished projects, architectural details, interiors and the relationship between design and construction.

Construction & Building Product Companies
Equipment, materials, installations and real-world applications.

More Than Progress Photography

Progress photography is an important part of construction documentation, but a project can produce much more valuable imagery.

A completed project can become a portfolio piece.

A skilled crew can become a marketing story.

A specialized piece of equipment can demonstrate capability.

A difficult installation can illustrate expertise.

Aerial imagery can communicate the scale of an entire project.

And photographs of the people doing the work can put a human face on an otherwise technical industry.

We look for those opportunities while we're on site.

Photography That Works Beyond the Jobsite

Construction photography can serve many purposes long after the photographer leaves the project.

Images can be used for:

Websites & Digital Marketing
Show potential clients what your company builds and the capabilities you bring to a project.

Proposals & Presentations
Use real project photography to demonstrate experience and qualifications.

Corporate Communications
Tell the story of your people, projects and capabilities.

Publications & Advertising
Create professional imagery for magazines, trade publications, campaigns and other marketing materials.

Project Documentation
Build a visual record of progress, milestones and completed work.

Safety Is Part of the Assignment

Photographing an active construction or industrial site requires more than knowing how to operate a camera. It requires understanding the environment, following site requirements and working safely around people, equipment and changing conditions.

Red Tail Photography has extensive experience working in active construction sites, industrial facilities, infrastructure projects and other challenging environments. We understand the importance of following site-specific safety procedures, wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and coordinating with the people responsible for the site.

Duane Gillette also holds OSHA-related training and certifications covering jobsite safety and confined-space environments. This experience allows us to approach challenging assignments with an understanding of the safety requirements that come with working in these locations.

We are Photographers that Understand the Assignment

After nearly four decades behind the camera, we've learned that every project has a different visual story.

Sometimes the most important photograph is the completed building. Sometimes it's the electrician working inside a wall, the equipment moving material across a site, the engineer examining a critical component or the crew standing together at the end of a long project.

Our job is to recognize those moments and create images that are both visually compelling and useful to the people who commissioned them.

Let's Talk About Your Project

If you have a construction, engineering or infrastructure project that needs professional photography or video, we'd be happy to discuss your project needs.
